Selling your home or downsizing is stressful at the best of times, but moving house over Christmas brings its own unique challenges. However, with some careful planning, your conveyancing can go as smoothly as possible even during this busy period. Here are some tips to help you stay calm during a festive move.
Ask for Help
When you're moving home, and particularly if you're downsizing, family and friends are often willing to help out if you ask them. Be sure to let everyone know that you're moving and don't be afraid to reach out for support. Everyone knows how stressful moving home can be, and it's best that you don't commit to taking on too much by yourself.
Plan Ahead
If you don't already use to-do lists, there's no better time to embrace them. To-do lists will keep you organised, and you'll feel tremendously satisfied ticking off each task as you complete them. From packing checklists to cancelling utility bills, lists keep everything manageable.
Pay Bills In Advance
Many utility companies slow down or close completely over Christmas. Let them all know well in advance where you're moving, and make whatever outstanding payments are due in good time.
Start Packing Early
Packing is a daunting task, particularly if you're downsizing and leaving the family home. It's best to start packing 1-2 months before your moving date to give you time to declutter the house.
By starting your packing early, you'll also get a chance to book a slot with a moving company well in advance of the moving date.
Make Time for Friends and Family
It's easy to lose track of friends and family when you're focused on selling your home. However, it's important to make time for relaxing and enjoying the festivities. Make sure you take care of your Christmas shopping early so that you can put your feet up and enjoy quality family time before the big move.
Know Where you're Spending Christmas
If you're spending Christmas in your new home, make sure you'll have basic furniture unpacked in advance so that you don't spend all of Christmas Day unpacking instead of enjoying yourself.
Remember that shops close early and it might be difficult to get hold of essentials over the holidays, and so you should ensure you have everything you need in your new home to carry you over until after Christmas.
Sometimes, it isn't possible to move into your new home in time for Christmas, and you may be spending it somewhere else, such as a hotel or a relative's house. If you have children, this can be especially stressful, but so long as they know that Santa will still find them, they'll be fine!
